Merry Mischief Civil and Medieval School Shows :)

Hey Ho~

Just thought I'd share some of the fun stuff that we do for our school programs.
We had a very fun week last week, full of history and costuming, song and story!

At Gorham Elementary we played there and did our show "Songs of the Civil War" and wanted to show you a pic or two of that. We had a fun time there, and this is our 3rd year there doing this program. The Gorham Historical Society helps to put on a day for the students and they are very knowledgeable and also dress up for the kids (next year, if they do it again, I will be sure to get more pics of them!)

Here is our setup for that....
It is mind-boggling to me that an overwhelming majority of children these days are not acquainted with traditional American folk music. I mean, such standards as: "Old Grey Mare", "Polly Wolly Doodle", "Dixie", "Goober Peas" and "Beautiful Dreamer" are brand new songs for them! We do these and many more including Lincoln's Campaign Song! This is our Merry Mischief way of bringing old music forward and keeping it going! We commend this school and their community's Historical Society for caring enough to keep kids learning and having fun with History!!

Hey, wait.....
Who's that old guy? :)

We bring music and dolls and folklore to help tell some of the history of the day.
Oh, and check out those flags. That is a replica 36 star flag from 1861....not the one we have today.

The following day found us even further back in time at one of our favorite schools to play at. Martha Brown Middle School in Fairport! They have an Annual Medieval Days for their students and we've been there for many years now and are always grateful to be asked back again. This school is phenomenal! The teachers AND the students all get into the spirit of the event and dress up too!

Check out this school's team spirit!

Here is our Merry Mischief Stage setup for this day's events:

Some fun props....including Ratty for the Black Plague.....

This is a Model School and I wish more schools were like it.
Their Music and Arts programs are tops. And the reason is because of a great Parent-Teachers Association with involved and caring Parents that support the Teachers and the school. But check out these teachers!
How's this for modeling participation?

Aren't they AWESOME???

Truly a fun day had by ALL!

Chivalry and....Zombies.

This last weekend we played at the Silver Kingdom Renaissance Faire Charlton, MA. In the past, it has been a larp faire (Live Action Role Play). Last year, it was awash with Larpers and filled to capacity with them for their annual “Blood Games”. That was interesting and I wrote about it several times culminating with a story called “The World According to Larp.”

This is a beautiful property, not yet discovered by many. There are miles of woods in the back, and the faire is set up by the tavern and the front fields.

This year, the owners and directors of the faire grounds (over 200 acres of former horse farm) decided to focus on the renaissance faire aspect. Their theme was “Chivalry” and it was fun to listen to acts about etiquette and to have Knights in armor vie for the two princesses’ hands in marriage. Their father the King was trying to wed them off, much to the chagrin of the daughters. A couple of the suitors were “not suitable” either which made for some fun drama. Harry & I played along wondrous well, by dedicating a song to the Princesses. “Sorry the Day I was Married” seemed perfect under the circumstances!

The vendors were fewer but there were a lot of performers. There was us (Merry Mischief) and “The Harper & The Minstrel”, “Mischief Managed” (an acapella group), “Buzzard Bay Buccaneers”, “The Graces”, “Granny Grue” (short for “Gruesome”.  She is nothing of the sort but rather a fun singing zombie gramma J) and we watched swordplay and there was also The Bardic Circle among others.

The weather was fabulous and we had a great time. Saturday night found us sharing a makeshift meal with Jay & Abby and their friends Jerry & Leeza in their camper. We wandered home through the fields and Harry & I settled in for the night in one of the cabins here at the faire. It was a pleasant space, full of wood and with the windows open letting in the screened breezes it was quite lovely in a rustic and modest way.

Father’s Day found us wandering the grounds again, and we enjoyed the patrons, the boothies and the other entertainers a lot.  We traded songs with other performers, and played lots of requests, and Jay & Abby sat in with us for several songs. I just adore how we sound together! We got lots of compliments and suggestions to have us record a CD together. The thought has crossed our mind. I bought some jewelry, some gourmet garlic oil, and we are bringing home an assortment of books from the bookseller Druscilla. I am just addicted to books, I cannot lie. Started reading one this morning, in the sunshine, in my camp chair in the sunshine before opening gate! How delicious that was!

After the busy faire day was done, and we said our goodbyes to patrons and other rennies, we met Granny Grue (Glee) and Jay & Abby at our favorite local restaurant here, at Zorba’s Greek Restaurant for our annual intake of some social beers and grand food.

They went home and Harry and I came back to the campground for one last evening. It’s nicer to think of a good nights’ rest than a 5 or 6 hour drive after a busy faire weekend and full bellies!

I am now sitting in my sweats, out of garb and jingles, with my faire feet up on a cot, writing away to you. I am bathed in the amber cottage light, listening to the sounds of a couple of vendors packing it up, with the sound of cranks turning and the dismantling of counters and booth frames. It is only punctuated occasionally by the calm sound of Harry slumbering on the other bed.

We are the only ones left here in the deserted faire ground.

It is quiet now here at the faire. Peaceful and still after all the hustle and bustle activity over the last few days. These grounds are beautiful during the day, but I can only imagine how wondrously creepy that this place can be during one of their Zombie Game weekends.

That’s right.

Zombie Weekends.

The larp grounds here are wild and deep and lovely....peaceful with a lot of elbow room here for Larping. There are teams that participate in the many game weekends.
Here are a few pictures of the grounds and some of the play stations/areas in the woods.

A beautiful stream runs through the forest…

Ominous marker notes the path of doom….Do you see it?

And along the way, thankfully an Angel will guard you….

I’m pretty sure that a zombie infestation manifested here in the past….

From what I hear tell, picture the game of paint ball, without the paint. Add costuming, zombies, vanquishing spells and healing rejuvenation remedies, people dressed as animals, demons all trying to kill each other or to live to tell the tale. It’s Dungeons and Dragons come to life, in the woods. At NIGHT.

This sweet quiet cottage must take on a whole other persona when I think of it being under siege by zombies. Of course, some of the best parts of that game happen at NIGHT! This is where chicken shit Merlyn says “Game off” (in a lilting Garth and Wayne Campbell voice).

Hell, I grew up in the country with the threat of coy dogs chasing you while you walked 2 and ½ miles home on a lonely road. You don’t have to tell me to use my imagination. My imagination ROCKS.

The idea of being here, in the woods, at night, while zombies clawed the screens or waited outside my door to eat my brains is enough to keep me sealed up here for a long duration.
Thank God we packed groceries, water, various alcoholic beverages, books, light and a composting toilet….because... THIS girl isn’t leaving this cabin...here on this night... for anyone tonight.

OH HELL NO.

I’m signing off now, absolutely stuffed full of dinner, satisfied to be out with happy and tired minstrels and having enjoyed the conversation of a vegetarian zombie grandma who is also on her way home.
I’m safe and sound, and will crawl in to snuggle with my peacefully snoring Harry, here in the woods, under the moonlight, on a zombie free evening…and all this has got me thinking...and inspired to say that.just as soon as I find my Ren bodice dagger to sleep with- by my pillow, and a 2 X 4 to prop the door shut from the inside (which, as you know, can double as a dead head remover,  if necessary, as advised in "The Zombie Survival Guilde).

Ah….
Just in case.
:)

Goodnight from the Other Side.

A Minstrels many hats~ Day 2

So this day saw us up and at 'em for 3 of our "Ren Revelry" shows back to back to enhance and support Fairport MS's "Medievel/Renaissance Day: ..for all the kids.

Our "Ren Revelry" show is supported by curriculum and backed up with texts...and...we hope...

Fun AND Educational.

So there were were....In the Rochester area, loaded in, plugged in, patched in, tuned up, garbed up, and fed...(aye, they fed the minstrels. It harkens back to a long tradition of "singing for yer supper" ...as well as getting paid "day of show" ...which....to those minstrels out there know (if they've ever worked for "institutions" that this is a BOON day :)

The shows went good... the first fine, the second rocked and the third.....
well....... the third went very well..... until it was the proverbial "bus time"....where the kids lost their minds.

It's a thing.

In gigs like this, you have to be VERY aware of social implications, role modeling, accurate portrayal, fun presentation...and MOST Importantly ....

TIMING.

When the mod begins...when the kids settle in....down....
and when the mod is OVER.

In the meantime, you try to behave your very best....
sing your most harmonious...
give as much historical information you can...
while still being "human" and entertaining....

and turn the kids ON.

There were many kids in the 2nd mod that came up to us to pet my ratty named "Scabbers". Yah, he looked like Ron Weasley's famous pet. I couldn't resist naming him.

After three shows done, costumes folded, backdrop dropped and packed, wireless buttoned up (we are very much liking our wireless system for these gigs BTW...it gives us such freedom!! I would recommend a bobby pin behind your ear hook to hold the mic. VERY helpful when changing between instruments, and dancing.)

Yes. Harry danced. :

With ME.

:)

It was scandalous.

Then my favorite part of the show....

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS~~~~~~~~~

Q~ "Why did King Henry the 8th kill his wife, Anne Boleyn?"

GOOD QUESTION.

A~ "He accused her of treason and beheaded her so that he could remarry a different lady. Not fair. Not advisable. ....but sorta like in "Alice in Wonderland" where the Queen says, "Off with their Head!" And like that.

Q~ "Is that your REAL Hair?" (to Merlyn)
A~ "Aye." (Merlyn pulls on her hair) "Ow!"

Q~ "We listened to Queen Elizabeth talk of dancing today, and she said that if the couple's hands touched while dancing (instead of not touching) that it was "scandalous"...but you did when you danced..."
A~ "Aye. That be because Harry & I are "marry-ed". We have.... a "license". :)

Yet another...
Q~ "Is that your real hair?" (to Harry)
A~ "Aye... and the beard too. When you get a grey hair it can mean only one of two things: Either you are getting old (and Harry IS 207.) OR it means that you are a WIZARD. He certainly looks like one, doesn't he?"

Home again, home again, jiggity jig.

Harry off to move a trailer full of gear to Wells College for their graduation tomorrow. And den? More wandering minstrel work as Erie Canal/Civil War era travelers, in garb at a re-enactment for Memorial Day festival in the birthplace of Memorial Day.

I went on errands to buy groceries and get WINE.

Old Vine Zin to be precise. :)

Day 3 is tomorrow.

G'nite from the Wizard and his Mate, Merlyn :)

Dragons & Fairies & Orbs, oh my!

The faire was AWESOME.
The weather was great, about 80 degrees, sunny and a bit of a breeze. Being from the frozen north, it IS good to escape the weary, dreary weather and have a break with real SUNSHINE.
It is a tonic. So is being in garb, meeting friends, playing music!

We are blessed to have friends and fans down here so far away from home!

There were some fun things hither today!

Anoles at St. George's Dragon Orphange! (these little critters changed color when put on my 12 string :) At first they were dark brown, and when they rested on my guitar and I played it a bit, they turned bright green with the vibrations! Kewl huh?
And this is what a Renaissance Faire "Rolls Royce" looks like. Now, THAT'S a hood ornament!
Check this out my StoryBook Friends!
An antique Vampire Killer Kit! Complete with Cross, wooden stakes, strychnine, Holy water, garlic oil, hammer, dagger....a bargain at the Manna booth for $175!
Tonight was the last night of the faire. We played at the pub for our final set and it ROCKED. Faire patrons were all waiting for us and buying us pints at the last set!  I couldn't drink them fast enough!! I gave away about 3 pints that were backing up....Here's Hoppe and some of the great waitstaff there at the pub.
This fellow, Aradon, even danced his boots off! (NOTE boot :
Should you take advice from a devil with a fiddle? :) Will played with us a lot and it was wicked fun!
Faire friends~

Oh, did I tell you that Miss Wisconsin came to our sets today? AGAIN? She asked us when we were going "back to Wisconsin to Bristol Faire again". (We've never even ever been there ONCE :)

Thought you'd like that.

Here's PROOF :)
Check out the ORBS here after the last of the music was done on the last night of faire!
The Orbs even followed us to the car for the way home! BTW...Abby told me when she saw this pic, that the tail lights on the car nor the inside car lights were on when this pic was taken. Sure looks like it though, aye?
My heart is warm.
We are home at Dre & Max's. Harry has taken our Suburu into a shop Max recommended. It is shimmying and shaking our liver out. Terry, the director of the faire, (who owns a garage) thinks it sounds like a tie rod. I'm amazed we have gotten around the whole state as much as we have! We've been to the bottom of the state and back up to Universal Studios and back again. I do NOT wish to get stranded in south bumfuck with a tie rod or broken transmission (resulting problem) off some exit in God knows where....at Bubba's garage...saying "You sure are purty....so (hack) you got some engine problems huh??" And then ...hearing BANJOES.
***********
So we've traveled hither and yon all over the long state of Florida...
over the Alligator Alley back and forth,
over the Skyway Bridge 3x...
and I guess the Magick of this part of the trip is that, unbeknownst to us, the tires on the left side of the car were 205s and the ones on the right side of the car were 215s. How weird. We've had it in to several shops since we bought it and nobody caught it....

Then over time, the car, wiggling over the miles being "sided" wrong, made the "boot of the cv joint" break on the way down...all the grease came out of the joint over our journey. We are lucky, lucky, lucky.

Am now in process of getting it all fixed and eating Max & Dre's leftovers and will head out on the morrow for points North...

Gods willing and the creek don't rise.

As I said, it's been a really lucky and Magickal journey!!

Fort Myers Medieval Faire 1st weekend 2012

Our first weekend of faire was a wonderful one, with the opening day rather brisk and blustery, with pennants snapping, jousters shiny, gypsies jingly and vendors being hopeful.
It's a fun faire and a mixed ground if there ever was one, and quite enjoyable to watch and participate in!

Trekies, Steam Punk, Pirates, Faries, Vikings did abound...oh yes, and wenches, knights, and rogues were there. I see that Steam Punk has really invaded the renaissance faires lately. Before this it was pirates, and I have to say it is interesting to say the least. Kind of unnerving for die hard rennies, but kind of creative in a fun costumey sort of way. League of Extrordinary Gentlemen to Braveheart.  It's like Sheldon at the faire as Spock sometimes. I've seen Scarlett O'Hara, at least 3 Captain Jack Sparrows and a Beowulf.
Here is where gypsies dance and face-tattooed pirates fill the pub.
Our days were magickal in so many ways.

What I really love, is when a song affects a person emotionally.
You can be playing a simple song for someone...and all of a sudden...they are crying. Crying with happiness or loneliness or with memories of past lost loves. It always amazes me about the emotion that is evoked with melody.
Hard hearted men are melted and stubborn women can be turned into weepy dear hearts.

It is a magickal thing. Grown men dance and act out Johnny Jump Up at the pub and then leave YOU a tip of a gold coin. (they already "paid" me by dancing! :) Groups of garbed pirates, wenches and fiddlers appeared to sing and pound on tables and yell "Huzzah!" and buy you pints.

A bar wench came by and laid two pints of hard cider on the table in front of us. Me, being the good minstrel, thanked them in between songs (oh my mouth was so dry to sing :) and started pouring it from the taboo plastic cup into my ren mug...and my guitar was SO excited it "jumped up" and spilled the Johnny Jump Up all over my guitar body, strings. I wiped the hard cider off the strings with the hem of my skirt and kept playing!

Wondrous happenings included some snowbirds flying south to this faire and join us! Our friends, Lori, Chris and Maria all came down to play. Maria joined us on "Katie Sings" and we did an amazing "Auld Lang Syne" at the Manna booth.
I love the Manna Booth! A large tent filled with gypsies, readers and drummers.
Both evenings at faire we played for pubsing and it was a blast. Saturday night, The Harper and the Minstrel
joined us for a rendition of "Our Mother the Mountain". Sunday, while Lorie was here for the weekend
she and Ravyn started a dancers line for "Celtic Circle Dance" which is always fun! Except this night, Will the fiddler and Darin Graves jumped in as extra fiddlers, so it was a full band and dance extravaganza!
And if you REALLY want a treat....

check out this clip! We are in the news and you might recognize a few of us! :)
http://www.fox4now.com/news/local/137364268.html

Aye! Nothing like the traditional fare of "chicken legs" at the faire :)

LOVE this clip! The faire is just like this, a sweet little magickal faire!
Anon my loves!
